Last Day of the Month GIVEAWAY for February!

Happy end of February!  It’s time for the last day of the month giveaway.  There was a new product I was hoping to have in the giveaway this month, but the timing didn’t quite work out and I wasn’t able to review it myself before recommending it to my readers.  I’m hoping we’ll see that product in March, but that’s not going to stop us from having our monthly fun!

So…without further adieu…

Anyone that has been reading Laura In The Motor City for a while knows that I’m heavily addicted to my iOS devices. Last count, there were 5 in my house.  And the upcoming iPad announcement could convince me to buy a 6th device (more on that next week).  Anyway, if you’ve got an iOS device, odds are you like to fill it with content.  I know I do.  So, dear readers, this month your iOS habit could be on me.  One lucky reader will win a $25 credit on iTunes.  The rules are simple.  Fill out the form below and click submit.  I’ll randomly pick one winner from all entries on Sunday, March 4th.  You can get extra entries for liking me on Facebook and following me on Twitter.  And if you choose to retweet on Twitter, I’ll give you another entry for that too (but only one, so don’t go retweet crazy!).  So, what are you waiting for?  Fill out the form and start thinking about all of the new apps/songs/TV shows you’ll be able to buy with your $25.  I know that’s what I’d be buying!

Good Luck!

Random Thoughts…

It’s been a while since I’ve done a random thoughts post and I’ve got plenty of random thoughts in my mind.  I should warn you that I’m not feeling like censoring myself, so some of the words that are written may be more on the adult side. You have been warned…

  • There are moments when I want to throw in the towel and run away.  Is that a bad thing to say out loud?  Does that make me a bad wife and mom?  The demands of my life sometimes catch up with me and knock me on my ass when I least expect it.  I’m having a moment.  I know it will pass, but I wish I wouldn’t have moments like this at all.
  • I remember loving school as a child.  I was that kid you’d hate.  My hand was always in the air, wanting to be the first to answer the question.  I lived to get A’s on everything.  This has followed me into my adult life at work.  I’m still striving to do the best I can and it doesn’t always endear me with my peers.  Is this my problem or theirs?
  • Speaking of school, I did well and the teachers always liked me.  I have discovered through parenting that there is a drastic difference in how a child is viewed/treated based on how much attention he/she needs in class.  I have a special needs child and while there are accommodations (speech therapy, occupational therapy), there are still 28 students in his class and how can his poor teacher give him everything he needs?  I express my concerns at the IEP meetings and I know that they are doing their best, but there are days when I feel like our school systems are just failing at this.  We’ve done a pendulum swing from the days when I was in school and there were actual classes for kids with special needs.  Now they want to mainstream everyone and provide special services a few times a month.  Well, I’m here to tell you that a few times a month ain’t doing the trick.  On top of that, some of the teachers don’t necessary understand that it takes my child longer to do things because of issues with his hands.  In my little dream world, I would be able to find a local school where his needs were the primary concern, but I know that such a place doesn’t exist unless I’m willing to spend a shit load of money each year.  So what’s the answer?  I’m not sure, but if you’ve got ideas, I’m willing to listen.  Seriously people, share your ideas.  Because I’m close to losing my mind on this one.
  • Are any of you happy with yourselves when you look in the mirror?  I haven’t been for ages and the most annoying, fucking thing about it all, is that I know that I have the power to change what I don’t like.  Yet – something stops me every time.  It’s like I’m setting myself up for failure and I don’t know why I’m doing it.  Is another piece of cake really going to make me feel better about myself?  No.  But do I eat it anyway?  Yes.  Why?  I keep asking myself why.  There are times I think talking to someone might help, but I’ll be honest…I’m the first to snort at the idea of talking to a shrink.  I mean seriously…how is that supposed to work?  I sit there for 50 minutes, going on about my woes (which in reality are probably not so bad) and the whole time the shrink is probably thinking this woman is a loon.  Doesn’t she know about all the starving kids in Africa and the world at war?  Why is she wasting my time?  My mom (bless her heart) always wants me to talk about how I feel, but I’m wound up tight like my father.  I’m good at hiding what I’m really thinking and feeling and find it much easier to listen to others problems rather than discuss any of my own issues with other people.  That’s probably a sign of trust issues and I really shouldn’t be trying to self-diagnose myself at 12:38 AM, yet here I am.  Yet again unable to sleep because I’m wound up like that stupid little energizer bunny.  So…when you’ve felt a little blue or slightly out of control of your life, what’s worked for you?  Maybe I need one of those lights to emulate natural sunshine.  I saw some new gadget in the Reader’s Digest that I thought might be interesting where the light comes out of the ear buds.  Or should I try yoga and fail again.  My type A personality does me absolutely no favors in yoga.  As the rest of the class is lost in their deep breathing with their eyes closed, at peace with the world, I’m the one looking around the room wondering how much longer this stupid pose is going to last.  And seriously, how the fuck did that chick stretch her leg over her head like that? Impressive, but not something I’ll ever be doing.  So…therapy.  That can’t be the only answer to figure out why I’m so crazy, right? RIGHT?
  • Not to be totally depressing, I leased a new Ford Escape Limited and am in love.  I never knew that ambient lighting could make a person so happy.  It’s only color, but it fills me with happiness to see purple light emulating in various spots in the vehicle.  Yeah, this makes me happy.  Go figure.  And I never knew that I needed a navigation system until I had one.  One more expensive option I’ll be requiring in new vehicles going forward.  My hubby will be shouting with not so much joy.
  • Okay – I’ve gone on enough for one night.  And I think it might have actually helped to get this out of my system.  Perhaps writing more about how I feel would actually help how I feel.  Hmmm…only took until 1:00 AM to come up with that one.  Now, perhaps, I’ll actually be able to sleep.  So we’ll close this up with one of my kids favorite lullabye’s from when they were babies….

Sleep baby sleep.  So cozy in your keep.  While mama shakes the dreamland tree, and pleasant dreams fall down for thee, sleep baby, sleep…

Night All!

Did You Know That February Is National Children’s Dental Health Month?

I got an email asking me this exact same question and I had to answer with a resounding “NO”.  Taking the boys to the dentist has never been a treat in my household, especially when there are cavities that have to be dealt with.  Once, I had to lay on top of my son to keep him in the dentist chair, which was no treat for me or the poor dentist.  The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) provided me with the following tips to help “take the scare out of the dental chair”.  Check them out before you schedule the next trip to the dentist!

Your In Dental Health!

Ten Ways to Take the Scare out of the Dental Chair from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry

  1. Start now The AAPD recommends that every child establish a Dental Home and visit a dentist by their first birthday. The earlier the visit, the better the chances of preventing dental problems, which can source fear for visits to come.
  2. Test the waters Parents with toddlers, who have not yet seen a dentist, should consider a “get acquainted” visit to introduce your child to the dental office before the first appointment.
  3. Choose words wisely Be careful about using scary words. Check-ups and 90 percent of first visits do not have anything to do with “hurt,” so do not even use the word!
  4. Time it out Select an appointment time when your child is alert and rested.
  5. Be confident Children often perceive a parent’s anxiety.  They also tolerate procedures best when their parents understand what to expect and prepare them for the experience. As parents become more confident, so will the child.
  6. Make ‘pediatric’ a priority Pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry, with two to three years of specialized training in treating children beyond dental school. Plus, because they see only children, their office environment is set up for children.
  7. Manage expectations Before the visit, explain that the dentist is a friend and will help your child keep their teeth healthy. Reinforce that the visit will be fun.
  8. Share a story Read your child a story about a character that had a good dental visit. (Ask the dental office for suggested reading.)
  9. List out questions Make a list of your questions about your child’s oral health in advance. This could include such topics as home care, injury prevention, diet and snacking, fluoride and tooth development.
  10. Offer control Give your child some control over the dental visit. Such choices as “Will you hold your bear or should I?” or “Which color toothbrush do you like?” will make the visit more enjoyable.

National Wear Red Day – February 3rd

National WEAR RED DAY February 3rd, 2012

The facts are clear. More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Unfortunately, the killer isn’t as easy to see. Heart disease is often silent, hidden and misunderstood.

The truth is: our lives are in our hands. We can stop our No. 1 killer together by sharing the truth. We can be the difference between life and death.

Uncover the truth about heart disease and make ending it a reality at GoRedForWomen.org.

WHY TAKE ACTION?

  • More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined.
  • While one in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, one in three dies of cardiovascular disease.
  • Currently, some eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in six American women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat.
  • Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
  • Only 43 percent of African American women and 44 percent of Hispanic women know that heart disease is their greatest health risk, compared with 60 percent of white women.
  • In women, heart disease is too often a silent killer – less than a third of women in a recent survey reported any early warning signs such as chest pain or discomfort before a heart attack, compared with most men.
  • Only slightly more than half of women are likely to call 911 if experiencing symptoms. And yet, 79 percent of women said that they would call 911 if someone else was having a heart attack.

BE THE DIFFERENCE

  • This year, Go Red For Women is asking women to participate in the 9th Annual National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 3, 2012, to make ending heart disease a reality.
  • PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY (February 3, 2012): Show your support by wearing red on National Wear Red Day to build awareness and inspire action.
  • JOIN THE WEAR RED DAY CHALLENGE! Join the excitement of our first-ever Wear Red Day Challenge as we spotlight our most spirited supporters. Go to Facebook.com/GoRed to review the 13 Wear Red Day Award categories of the friendly competition. Record a video or take photos of your efforts to “Go Red” and submit them on the Wear Red Day Challenge tab on our Facebook Page from Jan. 23 to Feb. 23.
